Visit Lisbon’s museums, where works of art from Portugal and from throughout the world await you.

Start at the Museu de Arte Antiga (Museum of Antique Art). Here, you will find the Panels of Saint Vincent de Fora, one of the most renowned group portraits in the European tradition, and the ‘Temptations of Saint Anthony’ triptych by Hieronymus Bosch. Also on display are the Namban Screens that depict the arrival of the first Westerners - the Portuguese - in Japan in 1543.

Two museums should not be missed in the Belém area. The recente contemporary art museum Berardo and the Museu Nacional dos Coches (National Carriage Museum) hosts a unique collection in which three monumental carriages given to Pope Clement XI by the Portuguese Embassy are featured.

Visit the extraordinary collection housed in the Museum of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and its collection of pieces by René Lalique.Don’t miss the works by Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso and Paula Rego, in the Modern Art Centre of this Museum.

In the Chiado area, one of the city’s historical neighbourhoods, the Museu do Chiado, offers you a tour through the portuguese contemporary art.

The Arpad-Szènes / Vieira da Silva Foundation is home to works by the most famous Portuguese-born painter and her Hungarian husband.

Get to know Portugal better by getting to know one of its most characteristic artistic elements at the Museu do Azulejo (Museum of Decorative Tiles).
